Ever wonder how the city of Cincinnati got its name? Those are the kind of questions I never really think about, but somehow along the way I found out that our city was named after a man, Cincinnatus. Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus to be exact. His relevance to our city seems slightly distant since he was only alive from 519 BC-430 BC and was a Roman. But the more I looked into his name and legacy, the more I see how appropriately our city is named.
I won't go into a super elaborate history, but basically what you need to understand is that this man was from humble beginnings. His son, Caseo, was convicted of a capital crime and he was sentenced to death. Cincinnatus was forced to pay a huge fine and this forced him to sell most of his possessions and land. He became a farmer, but was eventually called to lead soldiers into battle. After returning home victorious, he returned to his small farm to live a simple life until he would be called upon again to serve as the temporary dictator of Rome. Once his service was no longer necessary, he stepped down again to return to his life as a farmer.
I didn't realize how great of a man Cincinnatus was until I read about his past. He was given authority to rule, but he never misused his power and he never remained in his position longer than was needed. He could have returned from battle, or his term as dictator and expected a life of ease, but instead he returned to working hard on his farm. Because of his outstanding leadership and character, Cincinnatus has been held in high regard by many governments and organizations. He was a modest man, honestly seeking out the greater good and not his own. He had a true sense of service to others and a real understanding and practice of civic virtue. What a great man to have our city named after! He set the example of quality of character that I believe Cincinnati still practices today. We have a city (and state) full of hardworking people who come from humble beginnings and serve others well. This really gave me a sense of pride in where I am from and I hope it did for you too!
