I'm pretty sure that everyone knows who Christopher Columbus is...a pretty huge part of American history. I mean, the guy is a big deal. He helped discover our country! So it's no surprise that he has a major city named after him, right? Our state's capital is named after this man, and the city as a whole celebrates this historical figure.
You can find this GIANT statue of Christopher Columbus in front of city hall in downtown. It was a gift from the citizens of Genoa, Italy to the city of Columbus for the sole purpose of the city bearing this famous Italian explorer's name. Not only does the city have this statue, but there also happens to be a replica of the Santa Maria floating on the Scioto River in the heart of downtown Columbus. The ship serves as a museum dedicated to bringing to life the history of both the ship and the man behind it's exploration.
The funny thing about the city's namesake is that Christopher Columbus never stepped foot in Central Ohio. However, the city of Columbus celebrates this great explorer anyway, and has a sense of humor about it! Just another reason to love our state and the character of those that live in it.
